Mr Clark of 5 The Hoplands, Sleaford on
12 May 1999 was interviewed in respect of the Bass Maltings Picture.
Mr Clark was able to identify two more workers for us.
>He had lived at 7 Springfield Cottages,
Mareham Lane for 60 years to 1988, when he moved to the Hoplands. He
was born at Cranwell, and moved to Millfield Terrace when he was six
months old and then on to Springfield Cottages.
He worked at Bass Maltings for two
years in the summers when he was 14 and 15 as a "Kiln-pricker".
He had to lie flat on his stomach and push holes in the tiles, where
the heat came through. There were teams of 14 boys each
summer.
The next lad after him was killed
there the next summer when he had a bad accident. There were
no protective barriers then in many of the dangerous places.
