Fire damaged and open to the elements, The Maltings has been in need of repair for many years. The Sleaford Partnership explored viable new uses for these wonderful buildings and consulted widely on the options in 2005. The approach was incorporated into North Kesteven District Council planning policy.
The Maltings has now been bought by the Gladedale Group, a developer with a track record of regenerating historically important buildings in a sensitive way. Gladedale and architects Allen Tod Architecture have developed designs with close cooperation of the District Council and English Heritage. A detailed application for planning permission and listed building consent to alter the buildings will be made in January 2008.
The Design
The design is led by the principles of careful conservation and creative reuse. The Maltings were designed as a huge machine for converting barley to malt, ready for the brewing process. The buildings are robust and beautifully crafted, and conservation will allow future generations to see how the process worked. The buildings will be altered to allow viable new uses. The vision is to make a new place that is a great to live, work and play in, while keeping its historic qualities.
